Years 9–10: Introduction
The Australian Curriculum: Geography and (its’ various HASS-based iterations) has themes for each stage of schooling.
Year 9 includes two themes.
The first Year 9 theme is ‘Biomes and food security’ which focuses on how the environment impacts on food and fibre production. Natural and agricultural ecosystems are explored, and the impacts of changes in these environments on food production and food security are investigated using studies from Australia and other countries.
The second Year 9 theme is ‘Geographies of interconnections’ which focuses on how the choices and actions of people impact on places and environments. Local and global connections and interconnections are examined using studies from Australia and across the world.
Year 10 includes two themes.
The first Year 10 theme is ‘Environmental change and management’ which focuses on the study of a specific type of environment to investigate environmental geography. Sustainability and the impact of environmental worldviews are considered using studies drawn from Australia and other countries.
The second Year 10 theme is 'Geographies of human wellbeing’ which focuses on the differences in human wellbeing at global, national and local levels. Human wellbeing concepts, causes, measures and programs designed to reduce differences within and between countries are explored and evaluated. Investigations use studies from Australia, India and other countries.
